The Brazilian marine Mesozoic sequence contains a rich and poorly known ostracod fauna. The research in this area is an important approach to better understanding the geologic evolution of the Atlantic Ocean.

The first studies in marine ostracod assemblages were carried out by Krömmembein (1964, 1967, 1966 and 1975a,b) studying the taxonomy and distribution of ostracod species in northeastern Brazil (Sergipe basin) and North Africa. The author described two new genera and species for Albian section and a new species for the Turonian section. Neufville (1979) analyzed the ostracods of upper Cretaceous-Paleogene sections from Sergipe-Alagoas basin. Stinnesbeck and Reyment (1988) studied the ostracod assemblages of Poty quarry (Pernambuco basin) and discussed briefly paleobiogeographic relationships between Africa and South America.

Until the 2000, when was observed an increase in the study of Mesozoic marine ostracod assemblages, many works, always on a good  stratigraphical context,  presented only a brief  mention of marine ostracod ocurrences in Cretaceous Brazilian basins (mainly Sergipe-Alagoas, Parnaiba and Potiguar bains). Among them, can be mentionated the works of Kegel, 1957; Beurlen, 1967; Sampaio and Schaller, 1967; Tinoco, 1967; Schaller, 1969; Bengston, 1983; Koutsoukos and Dias-Brito, 1987; Viviers and Regali, 1987; Matsuda and Viviers, 1989; Colin and Andreu, 1990 and Viviers, 1990, 1995;

After 2000, the study of marine Mesozoic ostracods was focused mainly upon taxonomic, biostratigraphic and paleobiogeographic approaches. Delicio et al. (2000) analyzed the distribution of upper Cretaceous ostracods in Potiguar basin, described tree new species and showed two biozones for the Cenomanian-Campanian section. Viviers et al. (2000) carried out taxonomic and biostratigraphic studies of marine ostracods from late Aptian to Campanian sections of Potiguar and Sergipe basins. The authors presented six biozones to Albian-Campanian of Potiguar basin and four biozones to upper Aptian-Coniacian of Sergipe basin, discussing the paleobiogeography, biostratigraphy and faunal similarities with the African basins. Miller et al. (2002) accomplished an integrated study where the ostracods were briefly showed and discussed, while Fauth (2002) discussed the paleobiogeography of the upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary marine ostracods from the Atlantic Ocean. Fauth eTt al. (2005) showed a taxonomic study of the marine ostracods observed at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary from the Poty quarry, in Pernambuco-Paraíba basin. Among the thirty taxa identified, one genus and eight species are new.
