The first specific approach on Brazilian non-marine ostracodes is Müller’s study on the bromelid dweller species Elpidium bromeliarum, from Brazilian rainforest. In the first decades of 20th century foreign researchers presented a preliminar survey on freshwater faunas from northeastern region (Daday, 1911, Klie, 1939a, 1939b, 1939c, 1939d, 1940a, 1940b, 1940c, 1949d, 1940e, Triebel, 1939, Tressler, 1950). Later, in the 1950 and 1960 decades studies on systematic and other biologic aspects of freshwater and mixohaline species, were developed, which constitute the first studies of Brazilian researchers (Pinto & Kotzian, 1961; Pinto & Sanguinetti, 1962; Pinto & Purper, 1965 a,b).
In the following years new contributions came from studies on south Brazilian estuarine/lagunar systems. Ornellas (1974) proposed the genus Minicythere, while Pinto & Ornellas (1970) and Ornellas & Fallavena (1978) described new species improving the ecologic and zoogeographic knowledge on mixohaline faunas. At the same time fossil non-marine ostracodes were also studied by Purper (1977, 1979) and Purper & Pinto (1983, 1985) in Tertiary sediments from Amazon basin, especially Pebas (=Solimões) Formation. Ramos (2006) presented a new contribution to the Neogene Solimões ostracods.
Recent fresh water assemblages were studied mainly in Rio Grande do Sul state by Kotzian (1974), Würdig (1983, 1988), Würdig et al. (1988, 1990), Würdig & Pinto (1993 a,b, 1994, 1999) and Albertoni & Würdig (1996). Besides the systematic approach, those authors assessed the relationship between aquatic vegetation and other ecological parameters on species distribution. Additional studies on southern non-marine species were published by Pinto & Ornellas (1970) and Pinto & Purper (1970), this one proposing a neotype for Elpidium bromeliarum Müller, 1880 as well as a revision of that genus.
Guzzo & Coimbra (1989) discussed the taxonomical and ecological significance of nodes in the Cretaceous non-marine ostracods, with emphasis in a northeastern Brazilian species. Ramos et al. (2006) studied the paleoecological significance of the non-marine ostracods from the Cretaceous Codó Formation, northern Brazil. Paz & Rossetti (2006a, b) studied the paleolimnology of the Cretaceous Codo Formation (Parnaiba Basin) based on isotopic geochimistry, sedimentology and microfossils.
Pinto et al. (2003, 2004, 2005a, b) began the development of a new field on Brazilian ostracodology with the study of terrestrial ostracodes from São Paulo state, southeast Brazil. Those articles presented the description of new taxa and brought new data on terrestrial ostracode faunas from tropical areas.
