Although one may consider that the study of Brazilian Cenozoic marine ostracodes began with Brady's (1880) work, it was with the article of Pinto et al. (1978) that this research indeed made its way. Through that work a preliminary survey on distribution and generic composition of neritic faunas in the Brazilian continental shelf was accomplished.
Later, other preliminary works dealing with distribution and biostratigraphic analyses of Neogene ostracodes were developed, such as Sanguinetti (1979, 1980). Along the 1980 and 1990 decades the efforts were concentrated to the improvement of taxonomic knowledge where some families or genera were prioritized. The first efforts to unravel the actual biodiversity of marine ostracode shallow water faunas began with the taxonomic approach by Ornellas & Coimbra (1985), Purper & Ornellas (1987 a, b) and Coimbra & Ornellas (1989), the latter on the distribution and ecology of sub-recent species of family Orioninae Puri, 1973 in the Brazilian continental margin. Sanguinetti et al. (1991; 1992) studied post-Miocene ostracodes from Pelotas Basin, Southern Brazilian margin. The ecologic aspects of holocenic ostracodes from Tamandaré Bay, Northeastern Brazil, were discussed by Coimbra et al. (1992).
Dias-Brito et al. (1988) and Coimbra et al. (1994) studied ostracodes from Sepetiba Bay (Rio de Janeiro State), describing both the influence of ecological parameters on species distribution and new taxa, such as the genus Whatleyella. Other important studies are Hartmann (1957) on mangroove ostracodes, and Coimbra et al. (2007), on marine and mixohaline faunas from Cananéia-Iguape (São Paulo State) estuarine/lagoon system. Coimbra et al. (2006) discussed some taphonomical aspects of fossil marine marginal Holocene assemblages from Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil.
The subfamily Coquimbinae was studied by Ramos (1994, 1996) who proposed many species for the genera Coquimba, Cornucoquimba and Nanocoquimba, while Coimbra et al. (1995) presented the taxonomy and distribution patterns of the genus Callistocythere, identifying seven species, four of them new. Do Carmo & Sanguinetti (1995, 1999) published detailed approach on the taxonomy and ecology of Krithe describing new species in the Brazilian continental margin and assessing their paleoceanographical significance.
The study of Fauth & Coimbra (1998), dealt with the identification and zoogeography of genera Auradilus and Radimella in Brazilian continental shelf. The taxonomic and zoogeographic aspects of ostracodes from equatorial shelf were detailed in a set of articles such as Coimbra et al. (1999 a, b), Coimbra & Carreño (2002), Coimbra & Fauth (2002), Bergue & Coimbra (2002), Coimbra & Carmo (2002) and Coimbra et al. (2004). Another important taxonomic work is the review study of Aiello et al. (2004) who proposed the genus Ruggiericythere with four new species. The genus Macrocyprina was studied by Brandão (2004, 2005) who proposed three new species from different localities of Brazilian coast.
Wood et al. (1999) dicussed the palaeozoogeography of Cenozoic Ostracoda from the Neotropics to Antarctica. Machado & Drozinski (2002) and Machado et al. (2005) contributed to the knowledge of sub-Recent ostracodes from southeast margin through taxonomic and ecological studies on Actinocythereis and Cabo Frio region ostracode assemblages, respectively. Deep sea faunas research began with Benson (1977) and Benson & Peypouquet (1983) publications from São Paulo Plateau and Rio Grande Rise, which brought together some paleoceanographical insights. Additional papers in this field were published by Drozinski et al. (2003), Amaral et al. (2004) and Coimbra et al. (2004) on bathymetric distribution of bathyal fauna from Rio Grande do Sul state, and Bergue et al. (2006a; 2007) on bathyal ostracods from Santos Basin. Bergue (2006) dealt with the applications of ostracodes to paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic studies. Carreño et al. (1999) published the article identifiyng sea level oscillations based on faunal changes in Neogene ostracodes from Pelotas basin. Duleba et al. (2005) dealt with the applications of foraminifers, tecamoebas and ostracods as ecological bioindicators.
